In short
Domain Rating can be artificially inflated in weeks using expired domains, link networks and redirect tricks. A high DR with no organic traffic is the tell. Judge partner sites by real traffic and topical relevance, never by DR alone.

Domain Rating is the most quoted metric in link building, and the easiest to fake. People openly sell "DR boosting" services that take a domain to DR 50 in a few weeks. If you trade links based on DR alone, sooner or later you will give a valuable link to a hollow site. Here is how the inflation works and the four checks that expose it.

What DR actually measures (and doesn't)

Domain Rating estimates the strength of a site's backlink profile on a 0–100 scale. It is a third-party metric, Ahrefs computes it from links alone. It does not measure traffic, content quality or trust, and Google does not use it. Moz's Domain Authority has the same limitation: it can be moved by links regardless of whether those links are worth anything.

How sellers inflate DR

  • Expired domain redirects. Buy expired domains that still carry old backlinks and 301-redirect them at the target site. DR jumps; nothing real changed.
  • High-DR link networks. Blast links from a private network of other inflated sites. The metric feeds on itself.
  • Free platform links. Mass profiles and pages on high-authority platforms create thousands of technically-real referring domains.

The result is a site that looks like DR 45 and behaves like DR 5. Verbatims from SEO communities say it plainly: "DR is easily falsifiable, I can get you to DR 50 in a week."

The 4 checks that expose a fake

  1. DR vs organic traffic. The killer check. DR 40+ with fewer than ~500 organic monthly visits is a red flag with no innocent explanation.
  2. Referring domains quality. Open the backlink profile. Casino anchors, Chinese pharma spam, hundreds of links from the same IP blocks: walk away.
  3. Traffic history. A flat line at zero followed by nothing, or a cliff-drop after a Google update, tells you what Google thinks of the site.
  4. Actual rankings. Search the site's own brand and its main topics. A genuinely strong site ranks for something.

Any decent backlink checker covers checks 1–3 in five minutes.

In an exchange, your link is the payment. Give a dofollow link from your real site to an inflated shell and you have paid full price for nothing, worse, you are now linking into a spam neighborhood, which is how clean sites end up with toxic link problems. Every partner should pass the traffic test before any trade, whether you found them yourself or through a group.

This is also the main difference between platforms. Meeeters vets members on real organic traffic and category relevance, not on a purchasable number, the matching engine will not pair you with a site whose only asset is an inflated DR.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this topic.

?
Can Domain Rating be faked?

Yes. Sellers openly offer to push a domain to DR 40-60 within weeks using link networks and expired-domain tricks. The number rises, the real authority does not.

?
How do I spot a fake DR site?

Compare DR to organic traffic. A DR 45 site with under 500 monthly organic visits is almost always inflated. Check the referring domains too, spam sites and irrelevant anchors give it away.

?
What metric should I use instead of DR?

Real organic traffic on real keywords, plus topical relevance to your site. Traffic is the one signal that cannot be cheaply faked.
